Rachael Kichenside at Night and Day

Kelly Wood (gig: 21/09/06)
Across the other end of town at Academy 2, Manchester's flavour of the day, Mr Liam Frost was entertaining the masses.

Were he not, it's likely that he'd have been here, with a few of his followers in tow, to lend some support to fellow Manchester musician, Rachel Kichenside.

However modest the audience though, it wasn’t a problem for Rachel tonight. With a coquettish charm and the voice of a lullaby, she could sing her way into the coldest of hearts.

Opening with the quirky shuffle of Talk a Landslide, the vocals hung sweetly in the air, complimented by the entwining instrumental harmonies. Keeping the groove, Any Minute Now was a frisky little love song, from which flows layer upon layer of jazzy pop.

Thankfully, there was time for a spankingly new song, the delightful Long Time Later, but it was the stunning Nothing to Fear that stole the show with nothing short of understated beauty. The whispered tenderness demanded attention through its subtlety, as it was carried along by the delicate rich sea of rhythm.

Finishing with another impressive ditty, the excellent 9:35, it had only been a short set, but it was a good taster of what's to come from Manchester's next starlet. His crowd might have been glad he decided to perform, but Liam will be kicking himself for missing tonight.
