The Roadhouse wasn’t full for their first headlining show in Manchester, which came as a surprise, in the recent climate of everything Decaydance owner Pete Wentz touching turning to certified platinum, but there was a fair turnout. Opening the set with The Queen Is Dead, there was a surge of movement from the crowd, changing the room from warm to stifling. Nobody seemed to notice the heat, however, due to the absolutely mesmerizing performance by McCoy. Lacking the po-faced, tough image plaguing most hip hop acts, Travis is simply one of the most watchable frontmen in the business right now. The setlist switched between old and new, tossing out gems like Papercuts and Pillmatic from The Papercut Chronicles and Shoot Down The Stars from their new offering, the recently added keyboardist bolstering the sound and adding new elements to the older tracks. With a sound that could attract a Dizzee Rascal fan as much as a Panic! At The Disco fan, Gym Class Heroes certainly have the potential to be huge, and the fact they are a live band could garner the industry’s respect just like The Roots. Coupled with a great live show and 6’5” of charisma in Travis, it looks highly unlikely that Gym Class will be held in The Roadhouse again. |
