The Needles at the Roadhouse

Christina McDermott (gig: 07/09/06)
The Needles make me feel old. This isn’t a swipe at their talents, but watching them leap around like young puppies and perform impressive kicks in such a small space is enough to make even the most energetic spectator feel a twinge of exhaustion.

The Needles
The Needles

They’re choc-full of youthful enthusiasm and joie de vivre, which is undoubtedly a much needed commodity into today’s increasingly torpid music scene. Unfortunately for them though, their skinny t-shirts, flared jeans and their look of a rather more mature Busted have come ten years too late.

You could imagine them being feted by Steve Lamacq on the Evening Session back in 1996 alongside the likes of Symposium and 60 Foot Dolls. Their guitarist even bears an uncanny resemblance to indie favourite John Disco from the much missed Bis.

But what about the music? Well, it’s as fast, furious and filled with e-numbers as they are. "This is our next single! The last one reached number 60 in the indie charts, so hopefully you’ll manage to get this one to number 16!" quips lead singer Dave, before launching into Dianne and throwing his guitar around in a manner which makes you worry he’s going to take someone’s eye out.

And they’re certainly infectiously cheery, although unfortunately the members of the audience don’t appear to be as keen to chuck themselves around the venue in the name of pop as the band are.

The Needles will never be huge, and don’t particularly do anything massively different from any of the other bands on offer at the moment. But they certainly know how to put a smile on your face. And that’s no bad thing.
