Lady Look

The recent rise in burlesque has seen a bunch of Mancs getting in on the act. Lady Luck’s Burlesque Beauties have received so much attention they’re starting their own night. Lead dancer Dolly Mae talks us through the feathers, fire and fun!

Burlesque is very popular at the moment. Why do you think that is?

Angel Cake

  • Lady Luck's Burlesque Beauties start their new night, Angel Cake, at Tiger Lounge, on Sun 10 Sept at 7pm. Entry costs £5
  • Also performing on the night will be rock and roll rioters Eva Braun and the Ghouls

"Burlesque is a celebration of the female form. It's latest revival is due to a change in female attitudes. Women are prouder than ever of their bodies and their right to flaunt them.

"Performers like Dita Von Teese are great role models for women today, they are confident about their bodies and minds and women want to be glamorous like them. Evidence of the latest burlesque revival is visible whenever you watch music television or open a copy of a magazine like Vogue."

How did you get involved with burlesque?

"I work as a photographer and one day, I was shooting a Canadian burlesque troupe. We got on really well and I was intrigued by what they did. I loved the costumes and their attitudes, we stayed in email contact and when they next toured Europe, they asked me along… how could I resist!"

How do you feel when you perform?

"I get a massive adrenaline rush and I love the reaction of the audience; the more they laugh and whoop, the more I play up to it."

Have you had any embarrassing incidents?

"Nothing major but I've hit myself in the face with my own bra whilst swinging it round my head before! I also kicked off my shorts once and they landed on this guy’s head. He wasn't concentrating and he jumped about a mile."

How do the audience react to the shows?

"We get a whole range of responses. Sometimes people are a bit shocked and they don't know exactly what to expect, but they soon get into it. I've had a couple of overwhelmed crowds too, but they all warm to you in the end.

"Occasionally, we get crowds that think they've seen it all and chat through the show, but I find some large feather fans, a bit of fire or tassel twirling always grabs their attention."

You're starting your own night. What can people expect?

"We have used our collective experiences of burlesque to try and pull together the best night we can. There will be traditional burlesque, comedy, fantastic DJs and a great live band.

"We will be serving up angel cakes, feathers, glitter, audience participation, corsets, fishnets and dancing until the sun comes up. It's not fancy dress but we would like to encourage everyone to dress fancy!"
