 | | Cobra Killer |
Taking to the stage in a mix of tiny hot pants, stockings and platforms, there was little doubt that Cobra Killer were what Futuresonic is all about - a unique addition to the normal scene. And so it began. An abundance of bass sprawled around while their quirky lyrics went down well, as did the girls’ story of being happily sucked back to the Manchester stage, but sadly the atmosphere wasn’t sustained. Whatever the Killer had done musically, it wouldn’t have stopped a long chat about air con and soft biscuits being a set stopper, and the talk of life being much more than a square met with shouts of “get on with it” from the assembled. It was a shame because when they did get on with it, they were exciting, like an older dirtier version of girl band Shampoo. Venturing as far away as old-fashioned jazz before pushing back to Futuristic beats, there was a need to hear more than they gave. The girls have unique vocals and they vampishly stomped their way through a short set, which was abrasive and occasionally a bit incoherent. Yet the basics were all there – a Russ Meyer-esque look with some grubby electro at its best. All they need to do is learn to give their jaws a rest between songs and they might well be onto something! |
