| "I want to stand up and say I’m proud to be English. And it seems that that right’s been taken away from me for some reason." | | Damon on the ideas behind Born In The UK |
There’s an obvious nod in the title to Damon’s hero, Bruce Springsteen, and the song is four minutes of solid rock and roll, which the woolly hatted one produced in an attempt to "capture something about being British or English. I didn’t want it to be just a list of events, it had to encompass things that captured a version of events in my life. "The fact that the Silver Jubilee meant more to me than the Sex Pistols cause’ I was only seven years old, it’s not a diss on them. It’s just a fact of my ignorance. I want to stand up and say I’m proud to be English. And it seems that that right’s been taken away from me for some reason." The sleeve is designed by Andy Votel and based on traditional British fish and chip newspaper wrapping. In a typically wonderful way, it’s available in three different colours and accessorised with its own chipfork. Recorded at Rockfield Studio’s in Wales with producer Nick Franglen (of Lemon Jelly), Born In The UK is out on Monday 7 August, is limited to 500 copies and will be on 7” vinyl only. It’s the first offering from BDB’s forthcoming album, also called Born In The UK, which should be out in October. |
