Truth is, it doesn’t matter why the Cardinals chose Sacred Trinity Church to launch their debut single – all that matters is that its stark beauty, high vaulted roof and dark interior suits them down to the ground. In near darkness, they entered, the beautiful stained glass shimmering from the low-lights behind them, and suddenly, it all made sense. All Talk kicked in and the church swelled with epic tunes and driven beats. With the sanctuary providing a canvas, a stream of anatomical diagrams, chaotic fractals and grainy videos only served to add to the effect, creating confusion and wonder in the blackened nave. Maybe they didn’t need the amps quite so high in a venue that was made to reverberate with simple voices, maybe they could have offered up a little more light so we could actually see them, maybe they could have let the doors at the back stay open to allow some of the intense heat to escape, but no-one seemed to mind too much. This was a meeting of friends, a slap on the back for getting this far and a message of good luck for the future. With a double A-side as strong as All Talk/All Messed Up as ammunition, chances are they won’t need it. One thing is certain though - if this went on in church every week, the congregations wouldn’t be dwindling. |
