She Wants Revenge at The Roadhouse

Ged Camera (gig: 19/07/06)
When front man Justin Warfield announces that he believes that Manchester is in the top 3 cities in the world musically, it’s easy to understand his rationale.

After all, his band has song titles such as Tear U Apart that have an uncanny similarity to the works of Joy Division. Indeed, the opening three numbers, Red Flags, Sister and Out Of Control bear out this homage. As welcome and enjoyable this memorial is, it’s hard to understand why this large crowd has turned up for a relatively unknown American band.

Just as you begin wondering whether this crowd have access to the JD back catalogue or not, along comes I Don’t Wanna, something that roars out of the speaker, providing a complete change of musical emphasis. It’s a thunderous hardcore beat that is more akin to Interpol on acid or the Faint being electrocuted - it rocks the crowd that is now dancing from the front row to the wall at the rear (no mean feat in the Roadhouse).

Normally a two man creative force of Warfield and Adam ‘Tweez’, tonight they are supplemented with a bass player and drummer, and have turned the key to get the crowd moving.

Some of the momentum is lost as things slide down again when a copycat Cure bass line hits the speakers, but overall it’s a hit and miss set, that when it focuses on the more extreme hardcore can rock a crowd.
