On that night, the power failed in the venue and the band played an impromptu set next door at a packed out Big Hands instead. Tonight though, the band step up, not only in venue size but also in performance and produced a show of psychedelic, hypnotic groovers that really showed them to be one of the most underrated gems of recent times. The Jonestown have realised more albums than most bands could even dream of recording and tonight we’re treated to a 2 hour long set consisting of all the highlights, of which there are many. Starting with Whoever You Are, Anton and his band of merry disciples leap straight into a song which has been for the set opener for years. With glistening, layered guitars and an infectious beat, it’s plain to see why this band have been labelled as 60s revivalists. Their sound is steeped in the psychedelic nostalgia associated with great bands like The Byrds and Jefferson Airplane. Other highlights included a mesmerising version of Hide and Seek that drifted and swirled and featured a seemingly endless outro, Prozac vs. Heroin and That Girl Suicide. On the strength of this unusually slick performance - BJM gigs are renowned for onstage sackings, rantings and chaos - and the success of their tour, there can only be bigger and brighter things ahead. Let’s hope that Anton produces another 10 albums at least before he finally decides to call it a day. |
