Dressed in vivid pink keks and a colourful, contrasting patchwork quilt of a jacket, Penate obviously isn‘t shy, and an exuberance runs through the short set. At times conjuring comparisons to the Housemartins on speed, or the Style Council before they settled for a pipe and slippers approach, they win deserved applause for a summery, positive display. When the Maccabees physically leap onto the stage, it’s with an energy and buoyancy that remains undiminished throughout their set. They seem to invigorate an audience that quickly moves as close as possible to them. | | The Maccabees (pic: Ged Camera) |
They might not have troubled the chart compliers recently, but tonight, their followers are familiar with their lyrics. So much so that two of the crowd are invited on the stage to sing “Buy Cycles” as long as they dance all the way throughout as well – an invitation to which they happily comply with before leaping off the speakers and back into the crowd Similarly, the band themselves bounce, move and twist along to their fast-paced, up-tempo ditties, that are typically of their first hand experiences whether it be their growing up in Latchmere or a First Love. Orlando Weeks delivers the vocals in a sonorous manner, whilst his cohorts provide the backdrop for the dancing to continue on an already sweaty, steamy night that would be more suited to slumping in a chair. Providing plenty of indie nuggets for the indie kids reared on a indie diet of the Kooks and Bloc Party, they are just what the punters ordered. |
