Made in England - Art from the Heart

Art from the Heart

Whether it's a walk or a workplace, a rural view or a city street, Marcus and Ben toured the county encouraging people to express their feelings about those favourite places in artistic form.

From Gustav Holst and Ralph Vaughan Williams to Laurie Lee, Dennis Potter, JK Rowling and many more - Gloucestershire has been birthplace, home and inspiration for musicians, artists and writers for hundreds of years.

The hunt was on to uncover the talents of a new generation of Gloucestershire artists. And this time people who'd never had the chance to explore their creative potential were offered that opportunity.

Writer Marcus Moore and photographer Ben Cavanna are leading Art From The Heart, in a unique community arts project helping local people to celebrate the Gloucestershire places that are special to them in words or pictures.

Art from the Heart in pictures

Whether it's a walk or a workplace, a rural view or a city street, Marcus and Ben toured the county encouraging people to express their feelings about those favourite places in artistic form. The results will be showcased at a public exhibition in October.

Marcus says: "All you need is a heart that beats, a mind that speaks, and a place that means a lot to you.

"Writing is wonderful. It encourages people not only to be expressive, but also to play with words".

Ben says: "For me an image can often say things words cannot. Given the chance, people who might never consider themselves artistic, can actually produce staggering images that reflect their passions. I'm excited to work in this way with Gloucestershire people."

Tour dates

Ben and Marcus are planning to be at the following events across the county:

  • Mon 25 May - morning: Cheese-rolling at Coopers Hill
  • Mon 25 May - afternoon: Woolsack Races in Tetbury
  • Sun 31 May - Tall Ships Festival at Gloucester Docks
  • Sat/Sun 6/7 June - the Cheltenham Science Festival (in Imperial Gardens)

Plus potentially:

  • Sun 12 July - Tewkesbury Medieval Festival
  • Sat 18 July - Stroud Country Show

On each of these occasions we will be chatting to local folk about their favourite places, encouraging them to share thoughts through pens and lens. Let us know if you're coming to any of these events so we can meet up. Expect to see us wearing Made in England T-shirts.
