Building their ideas

The first session of the BBC London's HOME project for 16-25 year olds looked at the built environment – take a look at their multimedia marvels

Who's making HOME happen?

BBC London came up with the idea of the HOME project. Our staff are mostly leading the workshops. But without either funding or support from the following organisations HOME wouldn't have been possible:

  • CSV
  • Arts Council England (London)
  • Tower Hamlets Partnership
  • Rich Mix
  • Crisis (homeless charity)

BBC London's HOME project has teamed up local BBC journalists with young adults in Tower Hamlets, offering them guidance on how to create their own films, radio clips and pictures about their local area.

BBC London is running HOME with support from Tower Hamlets Partnership, Arts Council England, Rich Mix, CSV and Crisis.

In the first session of the HOME project, 16-25 year olds explored the theme of 'the built environment', looking at how they related to the buildings and green spaces around them.

Ahmed Musa is 19 and lives in Bethnal Green. He said "It's got me focused. I've never done anything like this before".

Yousef Dudleh, who found out about HOME through his youth club said, "It's been fun, challenging and creative".

How the poor live

One group of film-makers did a portrait of the disparity between the wealthy and the poor in Tower Hamlets, drawing inspiration from the famous George Orwell quote from the book Animal Farm: "All animals are equal but some animals are more equal than others."

The built environment

The environment is bleak for some

Ameena who lives in Shoreditch, was part of the photography workshop which encouraged the group to see their everyday surroundings through fresh eyes.

She commented, "You do look at the obvious social divides - like one street is affluent and the next is council estate. As someone who lives around here, I'd never noticed it before like I did today".

Other young photographers snapped the images that conjured up what they thought represented Brick Lane. These included vivid graffiti, trendy shoppers and the Brick Lane Masjid.
