A £4.5 billion waterside scheme, described as the largest project in the UK, will see the dock lands of Birkenhead transformed into a network of homes, offices and leisure and retail facilities.
Skyscrapers, like that seen in Singapore and Sydney, could line the waterside providing a range of facilities totaling 18 million square foot of development.  | | Plans for Wirral's Three Graces |
Three 50 storey towers, to be known as Wirral’s Three Graces, will be the focal point of the development, and will stand on a purpose built island in the heart of the site.
The island Manhatten style island, linked with pedestrian bridges, will provide housing for up to 25,000 people in 15,000 apartments and will be surrounded by a huge marina.
Plans stretch out to Bidston Moss where a new retail park will be developed near the existing B&Q and also include the improvement of existing port activity at Twelve Quays and The West Float. The major regeneration at Alfred Dock and Vittoria Docks will be most impressive with a buildings inspired by architecture from around the world, including an iconic building in the style of New York’s Flatiron Building.  | | The Manhatten style island |
Peel Holdings who are behind the plans have a track record including developments at Salford Quays and The Trafford Centre, which critics said would never happen and now attracts 30 million visitors a year.
Councillors in Wirral have welcomed the plans which have been 18 months in development and will create over 27,000 jobs. The scale of the proposed regeneration means a government public inquiry will needed before any work can start. What do you think of the plans? Add your comments below |
