Bridget Spiegl has lived with this beautiful garden for 36 years. Bridget is a talented musician (the first wife of Liverpool composer Fritz Spiegl) and a keen plantswoman, who propagates most of the plants she sells on open days. Being only 4 miles south of the city, Bridget likes the fact that her town garden is easily accessible by public transport. This is a garden which has been planted to give as much year-round interest as possible in a limited space. Self-sown carpets of crocus tommasinianus make a brilliant start in the gardening year in mid-Feb. By the second half of May the Rosa Banksia lutea, covering a south-west facing wall, is in flower. Planting is an informed and somewhat crowded mixture of shrubs and herbaceous. Various forms and varieties of hardy geranium are a feature, and Aquilegia clematiflora, Allium Christophii and gladiolus by zantinus have sown themselves freely among the borders. In early summer a clump of white camassia shows up well against the shrub rose Papillon. A high wall along one side of the garden supports Hydrangea Petiolaris, the climbing rose Madame Alfred Carrière and clematis rehderiana. Autumn leaf colour comes from Amelanchier, cherry, berberis, cornus and cercidiphyllum. Winter interest is provided by contrasting forms and leaf colours of hebes, Atriplex, eucalyptus, viburnum, lonicera purpusii, which flowers from December until March, and Prunus subhirtella autumnalis.
