Liz Carter has lived at Briarfield on the Wirral since 1963. She extended the garden in the 1970's by buying 2 paddocks a few houses away, so the main garden is separate from the house. It’s divided into 3 distinctly different gardens. Liz says the openings involve a lot of local people which she refers to as "my small army" and are a real village event. She is a self confessed gardening addict. Briarfield will be shown on North West Tonight on Friday 5th May. You can enjoy the spring gardens in a woodland setting on Sunday 7th May 2-5pm. The event will also feature a plant sale and tea in the main garden. | | Spring gardens in woodland setting. |
Tucked into the south side of Burton Wood, these gardens provide a sheltered environment for many specialist plants. The main garden in 1.5 acres has maturing trees and shrubs. Carpets of spring flowers, including erythroniums, uvularia and the spectacular cypripedium formosanum, bloom under magnolias, camellias and species rhododendron. The late spring means that these are still in flower, alongside spring alpines and early clematis, making the garden very colourful. Novel water features catch the eye and provide interesting sound effects. A substantial plant sale will be available in the home garden, a more formal garden with terraces, ponds and a woodland glade. A new alpine feature has been constructed during the winter. Opening as part of the National Gardens Scheme, the £3 entry (children free) plus profit from the plant sale go to selected charities including Macmillan Cancer Relief and Marie Curie Cancer Care. Proceeds from the teas go to Claire House Children’s Hospice. Briarfield will be shown on North West Tonight on Friday 5th May. Open to the public on Sunday 7th May 2-5pm.
