There were representatives from Russian, Chinese, African and Caribbean and Arabic communities all wanting to know how to go about getting a building that serves their needs. In order to find out what to do, members of the group invited in someone who has already set something like this up in Peterborough. Cliff Walker who is the deputy Lord Lieutenant of Peterborough set up a centre in his city, which is home to five different African and Caribbean groups as well as other ethnic groups in the area. The first thing that Cliff advised the group to do was to form a constitution with the aims and objectives of the various individual groups so that everyone was clear on what direction the group was going. "You have to show a need for the centre backed up with good research about what people want in a centre". says Cliff The group were in agreement that they were going to talk to their members to find out what they would want. In the next meeting the steering group intend to use these ideas to form part of the constitution as well as form a Committee who will oversee the project. They will then work towards putting their case to the county council. |
