Aiming High

By Abdoulie Sallah, Guest Contributor
A Leicester student is going to climb the world's highest freestanding mountain for charity. He's raising money for the British Red Cross to help them provide aid for people in urgent need. Read on to find out more about his expedition...

Everyday when I wake up in the morning in peace, all I see and hear is people elsewhere being torn to pieces through starvation, war and conflict.

I press myself very hard not to believe that this phenomenon making humanity bleed is inevitable.

"I hope that my efforts will support and compliment their endeavours in alleviating human suffering and helping those in urgent need. "
Abdoulie Sallah

I ask myself why should starvation lead people to unknown destinies when there is an abundance of food? And why should innocent young children and women suffer for the actions they play no part in?

Having no answers for these questions, I decide that it is rather unjustified, and that it is not dignified for people to be born, living and dying in poverty, starvation and never-ending conflicts. This is especially true when conscious efforts could be made to alleviate a bleeding humanity.

As well as writing to raise awareness of these issues, I am undertaking the challenge of trekking mountain Kilimanjaro (the world's highest freestanding mountain- 19,000ft) to raise money for the British Red Cross.

I hope that my efforts will support and compliment their endeavours in alleviating human suffering and helping those in urgent need.

When one takes a close look at the current food crises in Africa, the victims of conflicts and earthquakes, and the ever increasing number of HIV cases (particularly in Africa where thousands of babies are born without families), one is compelled to take action in whatever shape or form.

I am 26-years old and studying for my PhD at the University of Leicester School of Management.

At the same time I work as a coordinator for the Family 2000 project at the British Red Cross Family Support Centre in Leicester.

My journey starts on the 23 October 2006 when I will leave the UK for Kenya in Africa.

This challenge is supposed to last for ten days and I have to raise a minimum of £3000.

I am humbly counting on the generous donations and sponsorship of Leicester's people and businesses.
