History in action

by Jess Quayle, Guest Contributor
The annual Battle of Bosworth Re-enactment took place near Market Bosworth in Leicestershire on 18-19 August. Jess Quayle went along to experience firsthand the re-creation of a conflict which would change the course of the English Monarchy forever.

Just over five centuries ago on Ambion hill the armies of Richard III and Henry Tudor faced each other in battle.

The battle that followed- Richard's last stand in the War of the Roses- gave England a new king and saw the end of the medieval era.

Henry Tudor and his rebel force defeated a royal army more than twice its size, leaving King Richard III dead on the field and Henry Tudor standing in his place as the new King of England.

Take a look at the photos from the battle by clicking on the link below...

Each Year the Bosworth Battlefield Trust works hard to recreate and re-enact the events of that august morning in 1485 and this year was no exception.

Travelling back in time

On arrival at the Bosworth Battlefield site it was like walking back in time. There were white tents teaming with people in full medieval costume, horses tethered up ready for battle and blacksmiths working on tools and weapons.

Every last detail had been considered including real ales from the 15th Century and you could even pick up a piece of rat pie.

All the action took place in the centre of the field, with fantastic artillery displays, falconry, jousting and of course the famous battle itself.

Families had travelled from all around Leicestershire to see the event, and good fun was had by all. In the special children's area, youngsters could joust with toy horses, throw balls to knock out royals and listen to stories set in medieval England.

Let the battle commence

The Battle re-enactment was eagerly anticipated, and we weren't disappointed.

Richard III and Henry Tudor led their armies onto the field and amongst arrows, spears, swords and full armour Richard's fate was sealed- culminating in Henry Tudor hoisting the crown on high.

It was a great family day out, and a brilliant chance to learn about English History in an action-packed and exciting setting.
