Ditch the chips

By Jessica Rose
A Leicester comedian is using laughter to persuade children to swap sweets for salads. The Ditch the Chips campaign has been piloted by Leicester Comedy Festival and the poet and comedian Rob Gee. And now they want to spread the word to all schools.

Schools across Leicestershire and Rutland could soon be telling children good food is no joke – through a healthy eating campaign which uses comedy sketches.

A project called Ditch the Chips has been put together by Leicester Comedy Festival and poet and comedian Rob Gee.

Rob has been running workshops in Leicester to encourage more teachers to sign up for the scheme.

The project, which is aimed at five-eleven-year-olds, has already been piloted with several schools.

An animated film was also made with Phoenix Arts in Leicester starring characters designed by youngsters.

Rob ran workshops about Ditch the Chips at the ArtsLink education fair at De Montfort Hall, Leicester, on 27 September.

He says the idea was to get other schools to take an interest in the project.

Rob said: “Even if other schools don’t pick up the project, hopefully the workshops may have persuaded individual teachers to base some lessons on the idea.”
