Wires is probably one of Athlete’s most recognisable songs - and it has some very weird lyrics: You got wires going in You got wires coming out of your skin You got tears making tracks I’ve got tears that are scared of the fact Running down corridors, through automatic doors Got to get to you, got to see this through I see hope is here in a plastic box I’ve seen Christmas lights reflect in your eyes… But those lyrics sound less weird with a bit of background. It is a song about the experiences of one of the band members, Joel Pott, rushing back to hospital a few hours after his daughter was born (as she was unexpectedly rushed into intensive care) and the peace he felt as he sat with her and prayed. While there is no mention of God in Athlete’s songs, the churchgoing band have admitted in interviews that they are interested in God and faith, and how it works in their lives. So could Wires be a song about how faith (and prayer) worked in the life of band member Joel’s new family?
