Leicester Market became a garden of earthly delights during the August Bank Holiday weekend.
BBC Leicester and Arts Council England’s Roots project presented a Sunday evening programme of music, food, massage, artwork, poetry, installations, dance and displays… and shopping which was enjoyed by hundreds of people. This feast for the senses featured local artists and musicians including DJ Psychomantis, Persian and Chinese musicians - all home-grown talent.
The unseasonable weather held off. A mid-afternoon downpour was followed by clear blue skies in time for the start of the event which was opened by reknowned Leicester opera singer Diana Sharp.
The evening's entertainment continued with hip-hop sounds from Psychomantus and Pedestrian and included some spectacular breakdancing. Several hundred people joined a salsa session led by local dance school Havana Nights. And the evening ended with a world music DJ set from Una Musica Brutal complemented by a collective of local drummers. And the free food was a big hit. Attendees tucked into Kurdish, Indian and Caribbean cuisine. Co-ordinator Karen Pirie said: “The mix of people who come along shows just how diverse the entertainment on offer was. It was really quite a spectacular sight to see so many people dancing in the market - really letting their hair down." Roots co-ordinator Parminder Dosanjh said: “Taste was a great opportunity for people to sample something new. The market was so alive - even at 11pm."
