| | Hiphoperation at The Attik in Leicester combines the traditional deck set-up with elements such as graffiti art, breakdancing and MCing.
Launched to give hip-hop fans a space to listen, dance and enjoy, the night has sprung up to serve an under resourced part of the city club scene.
Promoter, DJ and hip-hop nut Sonia Rabone says she set up the night to fill a gap in the market and hopes to attract the dissatisfied element.
"Being a fan of hip-hop and having lived in Leicester for seven or eight years, I just felt there was really not enough to do.
"Being stuck in an office all week, come Friday night, if you are not in to House, Drum and Bass or R 'n' B there does not seem to be anything that caters for you in Leicester. | | Sonia (above) is set to unite the hip-hop community. |
"Hiphoperation has been born to try and fill that gap and bring a lot of the different pockets of people together. "Leicester's hip-hop scene is there but it's quite fragmented. What Hiphoperation is about is trying to pull those people together," says Sonia. The Attik's two floors is an ideal setting for the night which goes beyond the standard set-up of many nights and encourages creativity and celebrates hip-hop culture. Sonia, who DJs as Miss Gross Conduct at Paid In Full at Po Na Na during the week, adds Leicester needs to catch up with other cities around the country which already have well established hip-hop scenes.
