Actor Boris Karloff was born William Pratt in Dulwich in 1887. He became Hollywood's most successful bogeyman, a gaunt, bow legged actor whose menacing style scared the wits out of generations of film fans, particularly in the role of Frankenstein.
He was in fact one of the film industry's most popular figures, a gentle, sensitive, and highly cultured man. His final film was Targets released in 1968, directed by Peter Bogdanovich, in which he played an elderly horror-film actor. He died in 1969, still a much beloved screen star. |
