Princess Mary rides her pony and cart

The picture above shows Princess Mary the Princess Royal with her two sons. As in most big houses the children would have been looked after by a nanny. The nursery was located out of ear-shot and was very much the domain of the nurse. She was extremely influential in the family, responsible for the children's upbringing and discipline. Later the governess would school the children until they were old enough to attend boarding school.
