|  |  |  | Roman steps, Michaelgate They were excavated in 1984. They were found to be from the 2nd century AD. The North-south flight of four monumental steps, interspersed with ramps, on the alignment of the main north-south street, Ermine Street, with a possible kerb, drain and paving. Wheeled transport took a zigzag route up the hill.
