Madeira is a mountainous island with a humid yet pleasant climate situated in the Atlantic Ocean. The images selected for the photo essay represent landscapes, people, and still life. Two of the landscape photos were taken from mountain summits. Another was taken from Cabo Girão, the second highest cliff face in the world. Another two photos depict the urbanised, yet characterful landscape of the capital city, Funchal. Although not strictly a landscape photograph, the fern frond is an example of the island's "green" and tropical nature. Madeiran residents (particularly men) present many opportunities for the photographer as they visibly gather in towns and villages playing cards, talking, and attending to fishing boats. This photo essay also shows two at work – one waiting for tourists planning to take a "toboggan" ride downhill into Funchal, and also a Fisherman in Funchal market. Photos of still life included here represent some of the local produce albeit in an abstract way - fish and fruit.
