Now their stories, in some cases harrowing, in all cases moving, have been recorded in An Ember Saved from the Fire, a two part documentary produced by BBC Radio Leeds.
The documentary was broadcast on BBC Radio Leeds' Sunday Breakfast show in 2004 to commemorate Holocaust Memorial Day.
All the entire interviews with survivors, used to make up the radio programme, are being archived for posterity in the Brotherton Library at Leeds University.
Holocaust Memorial Day is officially held on Tuesday 27 January (the anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi extermination camp at Auschwitz).
