Remembering Quarry Hill flats

Quarry Hill is in the centre of Leeds overlooking the bus station. It is now the site of the West Yorkshire Playhouse and the BBC but it once was the site of a famous housing development. Do you remember Quarry Hill flats?

The Quarry Hill flats were ready for habitation in 1938 although building work continued for a time after. The flats were apparently modelled on Karl Marx Hof flats in Vienna and built by Leeds City Council.

It was the largest housing scheme in the country at the time it was built and aimed to incorporate the latest housing ideas and techniques.

Flats in Quarry Hill had solid fuel ranges, electric lighting, a modern refuse disposal system and communal facilities. For families housed in the flats it was first thought to be a great place to live.

However, the steel frame and concrete-clad construction was to prove disastrous and in 1978 the whole complex was demolished.

Now there is no trace of the housing it is hard to imagine both the scale of the development and the effect of the flats on generations of Loiners. What do you remember about the flats?

Whether a resident of the buildings or not, we want to see your memories of Quarry Hill on BBC Memoryshare.
