Tingley Athletic v Woodkirk Valley U8sGame 1: Tingley Athletic 1-1 Woodkirk Valley
Woodkirk and Tingley went toe to toe on Sunday in a bruising 1 -1 draw. Both teams never gave an inch in a game known as the 'Battle of Blackgates'. Tingley started well and went close early on, only for keeper Williams to cut out the danger. Matthews was pulling all the strings in midfield, creating a few chances for the Valley. McCarthy and Shaw seemed to have the Tingley strikers in their pockets, but Tingley broke the deadlock with a great finish. Penny-Larter had a great shot saved and Bentley went close with a dipping volley. Edwards was passing the ball with great control and more pressure from Woodkirk finally resulted in an equalizer when Matthews drove the ball home. Both teams went searching for the winner but both held out for a deserved draw. M.O.M: Luis Penny-Larter Game 2: Tingley Athletic 6-0 Woodkirk Valley In the second game the score line was a bit different with Tingley running out 6 -0 winners. Woodkirk's keeper Shaw and defenders Bathie and Williams were given a torrid time with Tingley dominating the first half 3- 0. Woodkirk improved their performance in the second half with Edwards and Tomie getting more involved and Vito having a good chance only to see it hit the Tingley post. Tingley added a few more goals to put the game beyond Woodkirk's reach but Thomas had a great chance for a late consolation but the Tingley keeper was in fine form. Valley found it hard to make chances at the start of the match. Saves by Clegg kept them in the game in the first 10 minutes, taking several hits from the Durkar number 6. Henshaw made the first half his and displayed some good mid skills. Smallwood attempted twice on goal and Ansell-Wood took the home team's goalie on in the last two minutes but lost the challenge. 0-0 half time. A much better start to the second half and quick paced. Ansell-Wood passed to Smallwood who nudged to Kendrew who had a shot saved by the Devils keeper. Longhurst and Callaghan defended nicely by clearing up field. Proctors speed came in handy taking several balls up the right side. It felt like a goal had to come and a Proctor cross to Smallwood, was belted in. 1-0 to Woodkirk; a lovely goal which gave Valley another three points to their total. Man of the Match: Clegg Goal Scorers: Smallwood Game 2: WoodKirk Valley White Team U9s 1-1 Durkar Devils A match which Valley wanted to win after a previous defeat earlier in the season wasn't to disappoint. Woodkirk went down 0-1 after 10 minutes and came to life shortly after with Mckenna and Diskin attempts on goal. Hurley made a great shot from the mid way. An even half with both teams stuck in what seemed their own halves. Second half and Roberts and Rigby showed their defensive skills taking the ball from the Devils and getting it up field to Mckenna and Hurley. Laycock took some hard tackles but stood firm and got the ball up to Mckenna who made a great lob across the goal mouth and was made good by a Simcoates header. 1-1. Charlton played a great game in nets and kept Valley in the game making good grabs as the ball was a being kicked. Durkar played on and missed two opportunities in the final 3 minutes, with post hits and poor finishing. Valley held on and deserved the draw due to sheer determination. The home side were first to score on three minutes as a crossed in ball took an unlucky defection and ended up in the back of the net. Five minutes later and they made it two as a good run on goal was not closed down by the Woodkirk defence. Valley pressed on and a foul in the box gave them a chance to reply. Parry placed the ball on the spot and made sure it counted to make it 2 – 1. Good play from Wortley saw them regain the two goal advantage just before the break with a looping shot from out on the right. Woodkirk made some changes to the side for the restart and straight away looked threatening. Hartley chased after a long through ball but the keeper just got there first. P Kennedy then sent a ball in across the face of goal but no one could connect. Woodkirk were now looking the most likely to score next and a superb flick on from P Kennedy saw Hartley running at goal, his shot dispensed perfectly this time to make it 3 -2. Valley continued to pressure and must have had four or five corner kicks. All efforts from Wortley were dealt with by the back four of Kemp, L Kennedy, McNicholl and Lloyd. Could Valley get an equaliser? Could Valley win? Would Wortley catch them on the break and net another? - We’ll never know what might have happened, as the ref decided that full time was up even though there were still five minutes of normal time plus stoppage time remaining. A disappointing way to end the game but a good performance from the lads today, especially in the second half. Man of the match went to Kemp. * Report by Mark Holden |
