Kasabian play Leeds Uni

Kasabian interview

Johnathan I'Anson
It’s strange to turn up so early to a gig, especially an event of this hype with a band of this reputation. Everywhere they go, words of there incendiary live performances precede them…hopefully tonight will be no different.

The details

WHO:

  • Sergio Pizzorno - songwriter, guitars & synths
  • Chris Edwards - bassist

WHEN:

  • 10 December 2006

WHERE:

  • Leeds University Student Union

December 10, 2006, and Leeds University hosts Kasabian, a band whose music over the past two years has made most sit up and listen, open their eyes and ears and form an opinion.

The debut self titled album seemed to slip under the radar in the mainstream, and subtly impress upon the conscious of those looking to stand up and be counted.

“There music makes me want to go an and knock shopping out of peoples hands” reads one quote on a fan forum…Ok this might not be the start of a nation about to overthrow governments…but listen to the Debut album and you can definitely feel the underbelly of a revolution in Kasabian’s music.

Sergio Pizzorno
The enigmatic Sergio Pizzorno

Adding to the unconventional early start is the ticketing system: Tonight is the first gig to exclusively use electronic ticketing; instead of the old fashion paper tickets fans are sent a message to their mobiles, with a barcode which is then scanned on arrival. The purist may not like it, but when entry is as quick and smooth as tonight, it wont take long for people to adapt.

I was fortunate enough to spend time with two band members prior to their gig. Chris Edwards, bassist and Sergio Pizzornio, the man behind the signature atmospheric soundscape that envelops the best known Kasabian songs.

"Music can drive and push people together, its very powerful... and that's what we do."
Sergio Pizzorno, Kasabian

Chris is upbeat, alert and engaging; whilst Sergio, in apparent contrast, is so laid back he’s almost horizontal. It’s easy to mistake Sergio’s approach as lack lustre, but there’s a big difference between appearing to not care, and being philosophical in approach. It’s only when you start to listen to what Sergio has to say about the band, the music, their fans and the power of the three combined, that you realise the creativity and passion that this man has.
