This weekend provided Woodkirk Valley with a busy schedule, competing on an Academy Tournament at Thorp Arch on Saturday where they performed quite well. Playing four games the Valley won one, lost two and drew one, narrowly getting beaten by the eventual winners 1- 0. With some fine individual performances someone hopefully took the eye of the scouts and may have unearthed a little diamond. Garforth Villa 5-0 Woodkirk ValleyOn Sunday the Valley were away to Garforth Villa and went down 5-0. The game started off pretty even with both teams having chances. Williams making a superb sprawling save to deny Villa. Matthews combined with Proctor to put Auty through but shot narrowly wide. Villa did eventually break down the defence twice with minutes to go in the first half making them 2-0 up. In the second half Villa put the game beyond Valleys reach with another two quick goals and could have had more but for some good defending from Shaw and Edwards. Valley could have had a late consolation when Bentley acted on a through ball but the Villa keeper made a great save palming the ball round the post. Player of the match: Shaw Garforth Villa 7-0 Woodkirk ValleyThe second game started off with Valley having to do a lot of defending. Thomas in goal didn't seem to have any rest bite as well as defenders Bathie and Williams. When they did get out of their area Stead and Morris tried to get the attack going but forwards Allen and Auty were well marshalled by the Villa defence. Woodkirk wouldn't give up but were beaten in the end by a good team with the hosts hitting seven. Although Valley were beaten quite heavily they will have learned from this defeat that will only make them stronger and better. Player of the match: Thomas |
