Colton get the better of WoodkirkWoodkirk were knocked out of the first round of the Challenge Cup on Sunday, losing out to fired up & on form Colton Juniors. The game kicked off under a heavy mist, grey skies and a slippery surface. Woodkirk started very brightly and P Kennedy had the first chance on goal on five mins - his shot from out on the left going straight across the face of goal. Stott and Webster were doing a fine job in midfield, winning balls and creating movement, and it wasn't long before Valley were through on goal again, this time a ball from Hartley to P Kennedy saw his shot loop agonisingly over the bar. 15 mins into the game and against the run of play Colton scored – the ball fumbling its way into the net as Woodkirk struggled to clear. Valley worked hard in search of an equalizer and nearly got it as Hartley’s shot at the bottom right was reached well by the keeper. Challenges were going in thick and fast and the ball had to be put out of play three times with Woodkirk players down injured. Grit and determination from Colton saw them net a second and then a third just before the half time whistle. The second half started with Colton on the attack straight away. Woodkirk made a couple of changes, bringing on Holden and Jaggar, and despite being under pressure showed spells of good play. A penalty shout was turned down as P Kennedy went down in the area and Hartley's shot with the outside of his boot was saved comfortably - alas no end result for Woodkirk today. Colton put in a strong performance today and showed they were the better side - netting twice more to make it 5-0 at full time. A spirited showing from Jaggar earned him Woodkirk man of the match. |
