Champions of Division 2 - Woodkirk U11s
Champions of Division 2, Woodkirk U11s

Woodkirk's first title

Garforth League, Sunday 7 May 2006.

Garforth Rangers U11s 3 - 6 Woodkirk Valley U11s

Woodkirk U11s ended their 2005 – 2006 campaign in emphatic style, winning away at Garforth Rangers and taking deserved honours as Division 2 champions.

The weather was grey and overcast but that did nothing to dampen the spirits of the Woodkirk lads who, despite being on the roll of an amazing 10 games unbeaten, still needed to take all three points from this final game to take the championship honours.

The game kicked off under increasing rainfall and was tricky on the pitch, the ball either holding up in the long grass or skimming along it with pace.

The first 15 minutes were tough going and Garforth were winning a lot of possession. After chances at both ends it was Woodkirk who took the advantage first when Barstow slotted home from P Kennedy's floated in corner.

Soon after that Barstow had a chance to make it two as Valley were awarded a penalty kick, but the keeper saved. Garforth kept the pressure on and following a corner got an equalizer on 20 minutes. Woodkirk continued to battle though and after a couple of close offside calls, the ball broke through to Moxon to make it two.

Surely Woodkirk would go on and capitalise from this? No! A mix up in the Valley defence left an open ball and Garforth leveled again to make it 2 –2 at the break.

The second half had Woodkirk playing uphill and although still 50/50 possession, it was Valley who looked the most lively coming forward. Another break through the defence saw Moxon run down the left wing, he looked like he was going to cross in but took it round the defender and finished from a tight angle. 3 – 2 with 20 minutes left.

Nerves still tingling as Garforth won a corner at the other end that needed to be dealt with well - their set pieces had looked threatening all day. Five minutes later and Moxon broke through the defence again, and with a clear one on one with the keeper, ran round him to net his hatrick. 4 – 2

The final 15 minutes, and with victory now in sight, Woodkirk were flying. P Kennedy hit the post, L Kennedy’s shot was saved well and Parry’s effort from distance just went wide. With six minutes to go Garforth won a corner but L Kennedy headed clear up to midfield, the ball being passed on to Moxon who placed his shot well to make it five goals.

Three minutes left but still time for two more. Garforth managed to grab a consolation in the last minute but it was Jagger who put the icing on the cake by firing in a trademark left footed shot from distance to make it 6 –3 at full time.

A fantastic end to a great season. Woodkirk only lost two games throughout, yet still had to battle it all the way with Horsforth, Yorkshire Amateurs and Kirkstall Crusaders all providing stiff competition. At the end only four points separated the top three.

Also a big thank you to Morley Markets who provided new kits for the lads back in January and they haven't lost a game since!
