Woodkirk U11s scored seven times to come away with all three points, and now need just one more win to secure top honours as division 2 champions. A lively start to the game saw Seacroft playing with determination and Woodkirk taking time to get into their stride, the opening exchanges creating several chances at each end. As the game progressed Woodkirk started to look more dangerous with some good passing movement including a quality through ball from Holden to Moxon, only to be judged off side. Valley's persistence eventually paid off and the deadlock was broken on 15mins when Smith shot from the edge of the area, his looping shot put over the keeper. The lead was short lived however as the home side replied immediately with a good long-range shot following a throw in on the right. 10 minutes later and Woodkirk took the lead again with an outstanding finish from P Kennedy who received the ball after some good passing play, took it down the left wing and struck left footed from 20 yards out – his shot firing straight into the back of the net without touching the floor. Seacroft were still in the game at this point though and would have equalized again if it hadn't been for a spectacular diving save from the Valley keeper Lloyd. Moxon was also looking sharp today and had a couple of close chances on goal before the 1st half was up, one saved well by the keeper and another skied over the bar after the ball bobbled up. 2 – 1 at half time. In the second half Valley continued to pressure Seacroft and were now looking more settled. Goal number three was a wonder strike from McNicoll, his free kick fired in from all of 40 yards out! A fourth quickly followed with L Kennedy finishing from a corner. Moxon made it five with a superb individual effort, taking on the whole defence and finishing with a cool tap in with the outside of his boot. Number six came as a result of a short goal kick and subsequent pass back being chased down and slotted home by Smith. Seconds later came number seven by Jagger - so quick that I never even saw it as I was still getting down the details of the previous one! Seacroft did manage to grab a consolation in the dying seconds, the ref blowing for full time with Woodkirk 7-2 winners. A game with lots of goals today and the whole team played their part. It wasn’t always one-way traffic and the defence did a terrific job in keeping the home side silent, including notable performances from Ellis and Chadwick in the later stages of the game. Man of the Match was Lloyd. The Woodkirk team has gone from strength to strength throughout this season – they now face Garforth Rangers in two weeks for the final game of the season… Come on Woodkirk! |
