By site user Howard Bowden This year Wigton Moor fielded a new squad in the U10 West Riding Girls League First Division.
The division turned out to be very competitive with few easy games and it has provided testament to the continued rise in the level of interest in girls football.
The three strongest teams turned out to be Garforth Rangers, Idle and Wigton Moor.
The match of the season was surely Garforth's 5-4 win in the Cup semi-final against Wigton, with Wigton leading 4 -1 early in the second half. The game was simply a fantastic match from start to finish. However, this match seemed to redouble the resolve of the Wigton girls and consistently strong performances saw them needing to beat Hebden Bridge Saints in the last match of the season in order to clinch the title. Slight nerves, a bumpy pitch and a determination to keep the ball well upfield were not conducive to good passing football, but a 1- 0 win was secured with no real alarms.
All the other girls teams at Wigton Moor are approaching the climax of the season with the prospect of a league or cup success.
Wigton Moor are a Charter Standard Development Club based in North Leeds. Next season we will run girls teams from U9 up to U14 age groups. Please contact Howard Bowden (email hp.bowden@ntlworld.com) if you would like to know more.
