Junior Football match reports

Beeston Juniors 0-1 Woodkirk Valley

Sent in by site user Mark Rodgers
Garforth Junior Football League, U13s, division 1, Sunday 5 February 2006.

Woodkirk travelled down the road to play Beeston in what was the league's most anticipated fixture and the swelled crowd was not be disappointed!

Woodkirk were ready for this game and it quickly showed as pressure from the front three, Boyes, Parky and Parker showed. Supported by an excellent midfield who challenged for every scrap of ball Yarnaldinio, Suffield, Glover and Snowy stamped their authority on the match early.

Wave after wave of Beeston attacks were thwarted by the rock solid defence of captain Dilworth, Austin and Scanlon. Marshalling his defence keeper Andrews once again was inspirational in keeping the Beeston attack at bay. Woodkirk challenged the Beeston goal in what was now an end to end game, free-flowing football with some excellent tackling from both sides kept the crowd well entertained. Following a precision cross from the ever present threat of Parker, Boyes leapt at the opportunity to run 1 to 1 against the keeper and hammered home a well taken ball to give Woodkirk the lead prior to half time.

Woodkirk took the field for the second half prepared to fight for the three points which were now in their grasp. Manager Dilworth and coaches Suffield and Boyes provided the inspiration to give Woodkirk the psychological edge as Woodkirk battled for every ball and kept the Beeston keeper busy. Following a thunderous shot that hit the crossbar from Beeston, Woodkirk piled the pressure on endlessly and with Wood coming on as substitute in the midfield it looked like it would be Woodkirk's day.

Not even the shout for a penalty in the dying minutes of what was by now extra time was to deny the Woodkirk squad the three points they had come to Beeston to claim. At the final whistle all the players shook hands and were applauded by the crowd.

An excellent derby, played in the true spirit of the game, a credit to both teams.
