Junior Football match reports

Glen Juniors v Woodkirk Valley

By site user Mark Rodgers
U10s, Sunday 13 November 2005

Match 1:
Glen Juniors 1 - 3 Woodkirk Valley

Woodkirk started the game well and quickly established a dominance over Glen with both McCarthy hitting the post and Hurley going close. Woodkirk kept Glen pressed in their own half with Tabor and Taylor quickly stopping any Glen attack. For all the pressing Woodkirk didn't open the scoring until the 12th minute with a good strike from Hurley. Followed by a goal for Appleby on 14 mins after some excellent play down the right from Diskin. With that goal Glen began to play and push Woodkirk back and came close with a shot just over the bar. Half time 0 – 2 Woodkirk.

The half time team talk for Glen paid dividends as they scored virtually straight from the kick off. A goal mouth scramble saw the ball poked home giving Rhodes in the Woodkirk goal no chance. The game was scrappy with neither team passing the ball. 14 mins to play Appleby was replaced by Spedding. As Woodkirk pressed for a third the Glen keeper pulled off a number of fine saves. With two mins to go McCarthy had a shot from distance which the keeper thought was going wide but found the bottom corner. 1 – 3 Woodkirk. Woodkirk finished the stronger with the keeper making another three world class saves.

Match 2:
Glen Juniors 1 - 3 Woodkirk Valley

Woodkirk start slow and Glen push Woodkirk deep into their own half some strong defending by McConnell and Hancock keeps the score 0 – 0. After 10 mins Glen take the lead from a cross Woodkirk fail to clear and Glen score 1 – 0. The goal wakes Woodkirk up and the midfield start to dominate the game with Cowell and Cristovao causing Glen problems out wide. Woodkirk continue to pressurise and on 15mins are rewarded with a goal from Bagnall. The Glen keeper has to make a number of saves from Cowell, Cristovao, and Bagnall. With Woodkirk finishing on top. Halftime 1 – 1

Woodkirk start where they had left off with Daneshyar going close twice. With five mins gone a gone cross from Cowell finds Cristovao unmarked 5 yard out a great strike over the keeper sees the ball hit the underside of the bar, the ball falls to Bagnall who taps in the rebound, 1 – 2 Woodkirk. Further chances fall to Cowell who shoots just wide and McConnell who forces a good save from the keeper. A shot from Cristovao again hits the post and comes out with Woodkirk in control the ball will not go in. The Glen keeper is outstanding pulling off save after save backed up by some strong defending. With two mins to go and Glen pushing forward a good long ball from McConnell finds Bagnell on half way with two defenders to beat Bagnall beats the first and goes for goal with the second closing him down he fires from just outside the box with a powerful strike into the bottom corner.

Both games played in a fantastic spirit and well supported by both sets of parents applauding both teams and good play long may that continue. Well done to the referees who never get a mention but controlled both games and made it enjoyable for the kids and parents!
