Woodkirk Valley U13s 2-1 Calverley U13s
Woodkirk Valley under 13s found themselves with just 10 players due to holidays, injury and last minute illness. It looked like they would be up against it as they were also playing into the wind in the first half. Right from the word go though they looked ready for the challenge and closed Calverley down quickly giving them no time on the ball at all. Woodkirk spent most of the half defending brilliantly and limiting Calverley to very few chances. The back three of Dilworth, Dixon and Glover worked tirelessly producing a near faultless display. This was reflected in the fact Andrews in goal only had two saves to make in the first 35 minutes. The five-man midfield of Suffield, Boyes, Yarnold, Parker and Scanlon worked well as a unit, tackling, covering and producing some neat play when in possession. Clark up front worked hard and produced some neat touches that gave Woodkirk hope to hit Calverley on the break. Woodkirk nearly took the lead in the last seconds of the half when a shot by Boyes was gathered by the keeper. 0-0 at half time and all to play for. The second half started with the wind dropping and Woodkirk finding themselves under increasing pressure. Calverley earned several corners but some committed defending meant they were unable to score. The pressure was building and Calverley were creating more and more chances. The defending by Woodkirk was still rock solid with Dilworth cutting out any danger and Dixon and Glover tacking strongly. Suffield, Boyes and Yarnold were getting a grip of the midfield and starting to create chances for Woodkirk. It appeared it would only take one goal to win this game yet it was not until 10 minutes to go that Calverley took the lead. After such a tremendous effort would Woodkirk accept a 1-0 defeat? Not at all and straight from the kick off a great move started by Clark nearly resulted in the equaliser. At last Woodkirk got the equaliser with a great move finished into the bottom corner of the net with his left foot by Boyes. It appeared a shock could be on the cards now as you could visibly see Woodkirk realise that they could actually win the game. The game went from end to end and Andrews pulled off a couple of good saves to keep the game level. Could it be, yes it was Woodkirk scored two minutes into injury time. A great through ball was touched into the path of Yarnold who strode between two defenders and produced a clinical finish to give the keeper no chance. A hint of offside in the goal but the final score was a 2-1 victory to Woodkirk, no more than the 10 men deserved. |
