Junior Football match reports

Garforth Rangers v Crofton Juniors

By site user Neal Dent
Garforth Junior Football League, U9 Division C, Sunday 18 September 2005

Garforth Rangers 1 - 0 Crofton Juniors

This was an excellent even contest which Rangers ran out winners thanks to some quality keeping in the first half and a breathtaking strike in the second. In the first half Rangers never really got their passing game going, though some neat touches involving Adam, John and Xander almost created a chance for Paddy. This game went from end to end and had it not been for man of the match Liam, Crofton would surely have had the lead at half time.

In the second half Rangers stepped up a gear and started to move the ball around. Xander was superb upfront, holding the ball up and bringing the midfield into play. Joe and Adam worked tirelessly down the flanks and both had chances to give Rangers the lead. Rangers finally got their noses in front when Xander played the ball back to Paddy, who took one touch before firing an unstoppable shot from 25 yards into the roof of the net.

Crofton kept coming forward and Rangers got the little bit of luck they needed when after a goalmouth scramble a goal bound shot was finger tipped by Liam before Joe headed it onto the post and out for a corner.

Rangers continued to show their will to win attitude when Joe twice flung himself into the line of fire to prevent the Crofton forwards getting a clean strike on goal. Elliot had another strong game at the back shackling Crofton's livewire forward and reducing him to one shot in the entire game.

Garforth Rangers 4 - 0 Crofton Juniors

This second game showed Rangers were up for the task with a convincing victory.

Playing two at the back and a three-man midfield Rangers were too strong for their opponents and ran out worthy winners. Shaun had little to do in goal largely thanks to the defensive qualities of man of the match Robert. Again Rangers were passing the ball effectively and took the lead when a corner from Sam was headed back to him. He took one touch before curling a shot into the far corner. Cliffy then started to run riot, winning the ball all over the park before going on mazy runs that just lacked the final product.

In the second half Rangers continued to press and Cliffy got his reward when he turned and hit a ferocious half volley into the back of the net. Crofton tried to get back into the game and two goal bound efforts were well saved by Shaun. Kallum, playing his first game out in over a year, almost got on the score sheet when he burst through the midfield before being felled as he was about to pull the trigger. The resulting free kick was fired agonisingly wide by Sam. Tom, Cameron and Ben worked hard in defence and midfield forcing a corner which Cliffy curled into the top corner. Cliffy almost got his hat trick as a vicious shot was saved by the keeper only for the ball to drop at the feet of Tom who calmly smashed the ball into the empty net.
