The director's cut

By site user Rebecca Johnson
Rebecca Johnson tells us about her experiences of filming of the award-winning short film, The Making of Untitled.

Facts

Rebecca Johnson was one of the directors of the film The Making of Untitled.

The Making of Untitled won the Best Comedy award at the Fiirst Light Film Awards 2005.

The film is a spoof documentary following the making of a horror movie.

The film was produced by a group of 30 filmmakers aged between 16 and 18, working with Leeds-based Access Moving Image.

I, along with my sixth form Media Studies group, got involved with the First Shot scheme through our media teacher Les Barnes. We had previously been involved in filming opportunities but on a smaller scale and as part of our course we were involved in a lot of radio, TV and print production but had not looked at film in as much detail.

We were involved in a lot of ideas development before even putting pen to paper and writing the script. We studied popular television programmes and film and talked about our target audience. We decided we wanted to make a film which people could identify with and was realistic.

Initially we did not intend to make the film a comedy. After talking about our experiences we decided to make a film about a documentary crew filming a group of students making a film, badly.

This way we could involve the 'reality TV' genre that's still ever popular and add realism by relaying our own experiences.

We each created a character and it was when we put them all together we realised they had comedy value. We decided the story should be told through the characters and we used talking heads and character interaction to do so.

The strength and confidence of the actors and the relationship between them, on and off camera, allowed our 'vision' to be achieved.

I have learnt a tremendous amount from the experience. At 19 I have had first hand experience at writing an directing a film. I learnt things that you just can't learn in a classroom from a textbook.

"I would be very confident in the future to pursue a career in the film industry..."

As I had no prior knowledge of the film industry I was a little nervous before we started filming but my mentor, Sam Donovan, Craig Lawson and Liz Rymer from Access Moving Image, and the rest of the team were a constant support. My opinions and decisions were always listened to and followed and I would be very confident in the future to pursue a career in the film industry.

The whole experience for me was amazing. My media group are a fantastic group of people and we enjoyed working together on this project. We cast some amazing actors that I'm sure have promising future careers.

The First Shot scheme set up by Access Moving image is unique and Craig and Liz are extremely professional and a pleasure to work with.

In the future I hope to travel before going on to university. I would like to do a media course and pursue a career in the industry. In what area I haven't decided - but after the last year, filmmaking has moved to the top of my list!
