All creatures great and small

One of my favourite words in Turkish is sümüklüböcek. Sümük is the Turkish word for snot, sümüklü is snotty and böcek is bug. Snotty bug! Would you be surprised to learn that sümüklüböcek is the Turkish for slug? Another Turkish word actually caused me to change my name! My parents called me Phillipa Kate, so for most of my life I have been known as Phill. Then I fell in love with Turkey, started to learn Turkish and later met and married a Turkish man. When Turkish people asked my name they would giggle at my reply. I soon learnt that fil is the Turkish word for elephant! So I had to choose, either go on a diet or start using my middle name!
