| | Volunteering isn't just the preserve of young folk, as people can clearly see when 75 year old conservation volunteer Marie Porter is in action. She happily spends hours getting stuck into making footpaths, felling trees, dry stone walling and hedge laying, with no signs of her age slowing her down. |

Marie, from Freckleton, volunteers for the British Trust of Conservation Volunteers (BTCV) and has recently been nominated for the Volunteer Achievement Awards 2005.
Sonia Lloyd, North Lancashire Project Officer for BTCV says, "After 15 years of enthusiastic dedication, no task has been too formidable, no detail neglected. Whatever the weather, wherever the location there is no end to Marie's avid devotion." "She's a font of knowledge, not only towards the projects themselves but also knowing each plant, tree or fungus that is adjacent to her. Marie's talents inspire and delight all those whom work alongside her." "The pride she takes in her work is obvious to all. Many stare in awe as they see this unassuming grandmother type figure doing an outstanding amount of work. Laughing, chatting and educating as she progresses. Marie is truly an inspiration to all."
