Veterans' Day 2008

Blackpool plays host to a celebration of the contribution made by all those who have served in the Armed Forces...

Blackpool is hosting this year’s National Veterans' Day celebrations from 21st – 29th June 2008.

There’s a fantastic week of activities in store – everything from a Royal Marines Beach Landing to a Night Time Parachute Drop.

The highlight is Veterans' Day itself when veterans will gather to take part in the Dedication of the new Choir Loft at the Cenotaph and Joint Chief of Staff, General Dannett will take the salute at the Veterans' Day Parade.

This is the third annual Veterans' Day and it is an opportunity to recognize the contribution veterans have made, not just in the Armed Forces, but in civilian life after they have left the Services.

Veterans' Minister Derek Twigg says... "Veterans are of all ages with a variety of backgrounds and they all deserve our recognition. Not only have they honoured their commitment to defend our country’s interests, they have also used their skills and experiences to enrich their local communities."

... and some Lancashire Veterans are doing just that!

My husband and I enjoyed the service at the cenotaph in Blackpool but feel it would have been better to have had the veterans march past after the service, rather than at 5pm which meant people were hanging about all day,and in the rain.

Other countries celebrate their heroes in a similar way, but they have a public holiday and there is much more recognition - why can't we? Most people I have worked with today had never heard of veterans day until I told them it was today! At least if it was a bank holiday people might pay a bit more attention!

a challenge for tony and alison, name 10 conflicts we fought in since the end of ww2

National Veterans’ Day celebrations in Preston
Veterans will march across the Flag Market to the cenotaph at 10.30am on Friday 27 June, where they will be greeted by the Mayor of Preston, Councillor John Swindells. A short service will be led by Father Timothy Lipscomb at 11am, followed by a reception at the Town Hall. The service, which will include music from the Band of the Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment, will commemorate all veterans, but also remember those who have given their lives on active service. Around 120 veterans are expected to attend Preston’s parade and ceremony, which will include the presentation of the Veteran’s Badge to 83-year-old Jack Hughes of Walton-le-dale.
