Preston exit National Cup

By Richard Sullivan
Preston were eliminated from the HA Cup by a well-drilled Ben Rhydding side, visibly smarting from their defeat to Durham University the previous day.

The Leeds-based team raced into a 2-0 lead within 20 minutes to take control of this third-round contest. Poor marking handed their Kiwi import an easy conversion, before an adroit reverse stick finish left Preston with a mountain to climb.

With typical belligerence and skill, Preston fought back to dominate the last 10 minutes of the first half. Luke Watson combined well with Sinclair and Cock down the right hand channel to win a brace of penalty corners. However, technical inaccuracies brought no return.

Preston further probed Rhydding’s left hand side of defence. Watson played in David Sullivan, the right half dodging one tackle, before slamming in a powerful drive into the bottom right hand corner of the goal. 2-1 and game on.

The second half saw Preston play most of their hockey in the home side’s half, but couldn't prise out the killer final pass or enough clear cut chances to really test the Rhydding goal keeper.

A switch to three forwards was the last throw of the dice and with another penalty corner wasted, Preston’s lack of penetration in front of goal was punished, as Rhydding hit a breakaway goal to seal their place in the 4th round.

PRESTON:

Eccleston (GK); Richard Sullivan (Capt), Platt; David Sullivan, Metcalf, Blackburn; Sanderson, Guyton; Sinclair; Cok, Fletcher; Watson, Cullimore, Scott
