Why no football commentary online?

If you're wondering why you've logged onto BBC Lancashire to listen in to the football - read on to find out why we are unable to stream our commentary on Listen Live...

It is a rights issue. We negotiate with all our clubs to secure the rights to broadcast commentary on their games.

Like everything else in football, there is a price to pay, but the clubs prefer to offer internet commentary rights as a separate package. The chairmen of all the Premiership and League clubs decided to sell all their internet rights to the one bidder so we've never really had a look in.

Obviously they look to make a profit from this which is why they all offer a subscription package to internet commentary on their official club sites.

Because we only have the rights to carry our commentary within our radio station's broadcast area, we have to 'blob' it out from the internet feed which is why you get the nice lady telling you that the service is not available while the match is on.

The good news, however, is that the BBC does have the rights to FA cup matches, so UK residents can log on to hear games featuring our local sides when that competition gets up and running.

this could be the begining of the end for football as we know it working class fans have been systematically priced out of football 1st ticket prices then sky sports then pay per view now no radio i fear the worst

I've just got my home internet connected up and really looking forward to listening to the football (live too far away for radio signal) - and I've just spent the entire 90 mins in disbeleif as I franticly searched the web for commentary. Quite frankly you can stick PPV for radio - it's absolutely ridiculous!

The Chairmen are not in the real world ! There is no way I will pay to listen to a match on radio !!! It's a rip off price on TV - but Radio ! - must be a joke - no chance here ! I will listen to old fashioned steam radio for free ! Regards Ken
