Justin and Sarah

Interview: Justin Moorhouse

Journalism student Sarah Athey had a chat with comedian Justin Moorhouse after his show at Preston’s 53 Degrees....

Justin, this is the second stop on your tour have you enjoyed tonight?

"Yeah it’s been great. It’s the second gig but it feels like the first proper one as last night in Wrexham we just did the show in a pub and this place is a great venue. I love the immediacy of doing stand-up; you can tell there and then if people are enjoying themselves."

On Saturday night you're performing in your home town of Manchester, are you excited for that and do you think there will be more pressure on you?

"Yeah I am looking forward to it, I do a lot of shows around the Manchester area too so it isn’t that different really. The great thing is that one show can be really different to the next; I like to include local news stories to include the crowd and you can get some funny stuff from a lot of the stories. The audience make each show different too."

Where is the furthest you’ve travelled with your work?

"I toured around Shanghai two years ago doing stand-up for ex-pats and English speakers. When I was in Dubai I was heckled by some Dutch guy who was laughing at my shoes! That was unexpected. You can do some great tours around the world but obviously it's difficult with my radio show."

You have worked with Peter Kay, Dave Spikey and Patrick McGuiness, do you all stay in touch?

"Yeah very much so, I’m working with Dave writing for ‘8 out of 10 Cats’ and me and Paddy are good mates we meet up for a drink. We all try to meet up just when we have the time."

What was the biggest turning point in your career?

"It has to be Phoenix Nights! I knew Peter Kay as we met on the circuit. At the time I was working for the council, just to keep earning while I doing my stand-up. I went for an interview for the part of Kenny on Wednesday afternoon and by Wednesday night I had the part. I went into work on the Thursday and handed my notice in. My manager was like 'Are you sure?' I said 'Yes! I’m going to be on a TV programme!' "

What puts you in a really mad mood?

"Stubbing my toe! I did it earlier before the show, it makes me really angry. Other than that ignorance, people who wont give new things a chance and judge people."

Which comedian really doesn’t make you laugh?

"Jim Davidson, without a doubt."

If you could be someone else for the day who would it be and why?

"Robbie Williams, I would sort his head out for him and then send him back."

What have you got planned next?

"I have more tour dates planned in October and November, and then I’m doing Snow White in panto. I’m playing with Celebrity Soccer Six on Monday, which is also my birthday so we’re having a big bash after that."

Complete this sentence: You should come and see Justin Moorhouse on tour because……

"He tries hard, there’s something for everyone, he’d really appreciate it and it doesn’t clash with the World Cup."
