can't believe no-one has mentioned John Simms who played the Master in the recentseries of Doctor Who and Sam Tyler in Life on Mars!! went to Edge High School in Nelson with him. my mum used to work with Tony Hicks (the Hollies) dad at a solicitors down Carr Road in Nelson and he used to wait for his dad everyday and bring his guitar and play it whilst my mum tried to finish her work.my mum told Tony that he would never make it as a famous guitarist in a world famous band and then hit him over the head with his guitar!!!

In reply to Charles (near bottom of page), JRR Tolkein stayed at Stonyhurst College while one of his sons was studying the priesthood there during WWII. He wrote some of Lord of the Rings while he was there. There was (still is?) a plaque in one of the class rooms saying this. Hurst Green, the village near by, may have been the basis for the hobbit village. His son also taught latin there in the 1970's (I was in his class). John O'Driscoll who played for Ireland in the 1980's (uncle of Brian I think) went to the school.

Jeremiah Horrocks, born Toxteth, Liverpool ……. Astronomer and scientist, worked out transit of Venus and forecast the 1769 transit of Venus that sent Captain Cook to the Pacific and Australia.
