(a) How long is the full sized car? Take the maximum length.
(b) The real car is to be packed into a crate 2 metres deep. What is the area (in m2 to 2 d.p.) of the front of the smallest rectangular box that the car will fit inside? The picture shows the front view of the box.



(a) - answer and commentary
The important thing to realise is that you are supposed to take a ruler and measure the picture.
This picture measures 6.5cm long and 3cm high.
The scale of 1:72 means that for each centimetre in the picture there are 72 centimetres on the real car.
So, 6.5cm on the picture = 72x6.5 = 468cm = 4.68m on the car.
3cm on the picture = 72x3 = 216cm = 2.16m on the car.
Answer: The full-sized car is 4.68m long.

(b) - answer and commentary
The area of the front of the box is 4.68x2.16 = 10.1088 = 10.11m2 (to 2 d.p.)
Answer: 10.11m2
