Q3.

A company makes up pre-packed fruit squash drinks from concentrate. The concentrate is used in a 1:8 mixture. How many whole litre bottles of concentrate are needed for one crate of 48 cartons each containing 250ml of squash? (2 marks)

Answer and commentary

First, we need to work out how much squash is needed.
48 x 250 = 12 000ml of squash. The concentrate is measured in litres, so we can convert:
12 000ml = 12litres
The mixture is 1:8. That will be 1 part of concentrate to 8 parts of water.
That's 9 parts in total.
So, the concentrate will be 19 of the total. To find 19 we divide by 9.
12รท9 = 1.3 or 113
So, we will need 2 whole bottles (one wouldn't be enough!)
Answer: 2 bottles
