Here is some useful information on how to combat risks when sitting at your computer.
1. Computer by the window - sun makes it difficult to see the screen.
What would help:
Moving the desk so that you are sitting sideways to the window
Fitting blinds to the windows
Using an anti-glare screen filter
Because the screen is flat, you will also find that your eyes get tired because you are focusing at the same distance all the time. Taking regular breaks will help.
2. Slouching - bad for the back.
What would help
Trying not to slouch at the computer: sitting straight if you can
Changing your posture and moving about
3. Screen tilted up too much.
What would help
Using a screen that tilts and turns to a position that is comfortable for you to look at (Looking slightly down to your screen is better)
Some people like to look up at their computer screen, but this is not recommended. When you look up your eyes open wide, making it more difficult for your eyes to stay properly moist.
4. Keyboard too high - can cause RSI. Wrist strain can develop into a repetitive strain injury (RSI).
What would help
Sitting so that your forearms are flat on the desk or table surface (make sure there is enough room in front of your keyboard)
Using a wrist rest to help keep your arms flat
Using an adjustable chair so you are at the right height
Relax! RSI can be made worse by tension
5. Stretching for the mouse!
What would help
Not stretching for the mouse - keep your mouse at the same height as your keyboard, and keep it in easy reach
Have a light touch on the mouse and try not to use it continuously
6. Seating too low.
What would help
Using a fully adjustable chair - many computer users suffer back problems. This is probably due to an awkward position while sitting at a computer
7. Take a break frequently. 2 hours without a break is too long!
What would help
Taking 5 - 10 minute exercise breaks every hour
Try and plan work at a computer so that there are short frequent breaks to rest your eyes and have a stretch
8. Stress!
What would help
Taking 5 - 10 minute exercise breaks every hour
9. Eye strain - paper holder fixed to side of monitor.
What would help
Having a document holder that stands alone lets your eyes change their focus. A change is as good as a rest!
